Kani has a long and sordid history, that is going to be summed up as best as possible within the next few paragraphs. More details on the various chapters of his life will be expanded on in the comments below.
For starters, no fairy is ever created with a soul. They are all slaves to their own nature, and have more or less no free will at all. With this in mind, Kani has a soul, and a large helping of free will. He was not born with either, but rather, it was bestowed upon him suddenly one beautiful and cloudless summer day in what would eventually be Bimini, as he swam out from his island, and found a woman on the beach on the opposing mainland shore. It only took a moment, but then and there, Kani experienced the one thing no fairy ever can honestly ever feel, love. And the moment that emotion settled into his brain, it gave life to a soul, followed be free will, and his first choice that he ever made in his life, that was outside of what his nature dictated, was to let her listen to him sing without ensnaring her.
He sung to her for days, every day she'd come back to listen, and every day he'd preform for her. He grew to love her more and more, but never was brave enough to swim to the mainland to speak with her. His fear would eventually come back to bite him.
That beautiful beach, where he made her young days happy and full of wonder and joy, became the place she chose to be married to the human man she'd fallen in love with. He watched them kiss on the beach, and then after the ceremony, they left. He never saw her again.
It took him another fifty years to be bold enough to leave his island, and when he first started with trying to find her, he was penniless. And shirtless and almost pantsless. An elderly couple living by the beach found the siren wandering nearby, and assumed he had come from a ship wreck or had fallen over board. They took him in and fed him his first cooked meal, which cemented his love of food, and in return, he sang for them.
Well they weren't ones to overlook a good thing when it falls into their lap, so they took Kani right to town, and presented him to the local opera and theater group. Impressed with what they heard, he was fast made a member. A little magic might have influenced the speed of him being added to the cast, and in less than five years, he'd become a well known singer, traveling with a troupe across the country on mainland America now.
During his travels, he learned that men and women were equally enjoyable to have, and had a few relationships with both. Men were usually quieter than women were, but he got something of a reputation for being easy.
One day, a handsome young man, rich and charming, invited Kani to sing at a private party for a considerable amount of money, and when the siren agreed and followed him out, he was viciously attacked. Unfortunately, the man was less interested in having a singer, and more interested in having a preserved siren corpse to display in his curio cabinet. The scar on the corner of Kani's mouth is an old relic of this fight, slashed with an iron knife that had originally been meant for his throat.
Of course, his attacker died miserably, and to this day, Kani has a deep seated hatred of attractive, charismatic men, distrustful of everything they say, and a lot more likely to visit violence on them if he feels even a little uncomfortable.
To this day, he's still wandering, somewhat still trapped in the twenties, which were his favorite year.

Childhood
Date: 2015-08-08 08:11 pm (UTC)Kani, in stark contrast is about the siren equivalent of a feral child, left by his parents when he was old enough to catch food for himself. He was one of their youngest children, and neither of them were terribly interested in raising another child, but they cared just enough to ensure their new baby wouldn't starve after they left him. So he grew up generally unaware of what polite siren society was, and rather took on the characteristics of a spoiled, obnoxious, loud and sometimes violent child. Since he usually got his way from passing humans with song, and from passing mermaids with violence, problems are usually solved with either one or the other.
He actually knows how to be a better human than a fairy. A human crippled by overwhelming fairy logic, but human never the less.
Honestly he doesn't fit comfortably into either world, and probably never will.
Adulthood/Young Adult
Date: 2015-10-13 10:59 pm (UTC)He summered in the cooler waters near the coast of New York, and spent his winters further down south near the Gulf, and met his first 'love' here and around that area in Winter.
Kani's first foray into human society was often fraught with social faux pas that were fine when you lived by yourself in a cave on an island, but not okay at banquets and diners where you eat a fish, bones and all with your mouth wide open. Or get into screaming arguments with men who disagree with you. He learned how to moderately reign himself in and managed to get himself seen as merely 'eccentric' instead of 'insane'. He learned that most women won't refuse him, if only because of his fame and good looks, and learned that there were quite a few men that wouldn't argue either. He has gotten punched in the face a few times earlier on for flirting with the wrong men and women. He's gotten better at reading people.
Better, but he still makes mistakes here and again.
