"Kani I really don't think this is a good idea." Cassian could hear the havoc outside. He knew it was a mess out there. Someone had been found dead, people were baying for blood, riots against all non-humans in the area. But the siren, as always, was unflappable. He paced in front of the massive window in the suite, staring into the mayhem taking place in the street.
"There's folks out there like me, Cassy. There's fairies out there who didn't do nuthin'. Maybe they ain't got what I got, but they still don't deserve ta be killed fer it do they? We gotta find 'em an' warn 'em. I know where they all hide here. Just gotta clear 'em outta the city fer a while until this all dies down." He didn't sound like he was about to be convinced otherwise, tugging on his coat and heading for the door. Even now, Cassian didn't have it in him to drag him back, though he desperately wanted to. He just nervously followed along with him, past the panicking bellhops and the desk clerks that were quickly trying to shut down the doors. They just barely made it out in time, and Kani took a sharp turn down the street.
"They live near the woods and the parks, so's all we gotta do is head there an' warn 'em. Alright Cassy? I swear, we'll just go there, let out the news there's a man hunt, an' then go back, ain't nobody gotta know nothin'. Far as anyone knows, I'm human, right?" The priest nodded grimly. But surely, someone had to know that he wasn't. After all, Cassian had quickly figured it out after a few shows, wouldn't someone else be that smart as well? Kani wasn't nearly as subtle or as clever as he liked to think he was.
But so far it seemed they could pass through unmolested, and Cassian's hand sought out Kani's. The sired reciprocated, giving his hand a tight squeeze.
"S'gonna be fine, awright Cassy? You'll see, in an' out real smooth, an' then we'll head back an' have somethin' ta eat. Sure there's a pizza place that's deliverin' right now."
"As long as it doesn't have sardines on it this time."
"Half sardines." There was a groan from Cassian, but it came with a smile. The usual argument was nice enough for him. He kept a tight hold on his hand as they got closer to the park, already seeing a few tell tale lights in there.
"Awright, I'm gonna go in alone, you stay out here an' wait fer me awright?" This didn't bother him, the last thing Kani had to worry about was other fairies, and Cassian nodded, looking back into the town nervously. With a quick kiss to his cheek, the siren darted off into the woods, leaving Cassian alone and nervous in the night. But, he was human. No one would ever consider harming him.
He stood there for a time, silent, when the crunching of steps in the leaves on the ground alerted him to someone else. He glanced back to see who it was, startled and... Oh. Just a man. Grim faced and bundled in a sweater and a scarf. The man too seemed surprised to see Cassian, starting a little before pausing a few feet away.
"... Hey." His voice was gruff and dry, but not overly dangerous, and Cassian relaxed a little, managing a small smile.
"Hello. Late night for a walk don't you think?" The man snorted, fussing around in his pockets for a cigarette and raising it to his lips.
"Couldn't sit at home. Not with the mess that's going on in town. Dead kids, Father. You know the deal." Cassian did know the deal, and he sighed, looking back into the forest.
"I do. It... I can't believe someone would do that. They were only children." The hiss of a lighter being flicked on cut the air, and the man took a drag from his cigarette.
"I can. It's not like their kind can help themselves." Cassian stiffened. Oh.
"Excuse me sir... their kind?" The man sighed, exhaling a plume of acrid smoke into the air.
"Their kind, fair folk, fairies, Sidhe, you know what I'm talking about. They can't help what they do."
"We... don't exactly know that it was a fairy, sir, humans can kill children too-"
"They were found in the forest, that's their territory, bloodless, missing parts- Fairies eat humans, you do know that, don't you?" Cassian felt his stomach churning. He remembered past conversations with Kani, the siren admitting some fairies didn't see humans as equals. Meat is meat, Cassy, some fairies just can't tell the difference-
"The ones here wouldn't-"
"Don't apologize for them. They would. You must be young, reading cute little fairy tales where they're helpful, chubby old women. Fairies are vicious, they're not much better than animals. They don't even have souls, Father, there's nothing there for you to convert and save." Again Kani's bright words played around in his mind. I earned mine fair and square, I'm not like the rest.
"What if one did have a soul?" That made the man bark in laughter, flicking ashes to the ground.
"How could you even prove it? They might not be able to lie but I can see one managing to convince someone they had a soul, just to get what they want. They can't help it, can't really get too mad at them, just something you gotta... explain. They won't understand it morally, you just have to give them a reason not to screw you over." Cassian didn't like how this conversation was going, and he started to head for the forest. "Where are you going, Father? It's not safe in there, the fair folk aren't going to treat you any better just because you're holy."
"I left something in there the other day and I just need to-" The crunching of leaves, from the inside of the forest, made his heart start to hammer in his chest. He opened his mouth to shout out the name of his friend before he showed up, but in no short order, out came Kani, tall and grinning, bearing the trademark shark teeth in the back of his head.
"Cassy! Hey who's this, ya made a friend out here?" He looked towards the smoking man, and Cassian made a motion to tug him away.
"It's no one we were just going-" The man hadn't looked away from Kani, staring at the siren, with those pointed ears and pointed teeth, elegant features and overly bright eyes. His hand made a motion, even as he started to talk.
"Well that explains your views, Father. Trust me, you'll thank me later." A dark brow quirked, and Kani turned his head and opened his mouth to ask something.
Before everything collapsed into Hell. Like thunder, a sharp, ringing sound shot out across the air. There wasn't a scream, just a sharp, pained gasp, and the siren's tall, thin shape suddenly collapsed to the ground. The lights of flashlights close to the park suddenly turned on them, and in the distance, an engine revved. No, the screaming, as Cassian soon leaned, had come from himself, clambering to his side and trying to gather him to him. Kani could take a gun shot. He'd been shot at before, just pull it out and pour some water on it-
There was no denying the odd smoke that rose from the wound though, the sizzling sound like white hot metal striking flesh. It was an iron slug, buried deep in him, and the siren's thin blood gushed out. It'd buried itself in his heart.
He turned his head, his fingers fumbling on him for his knife, but the mad had long since run from the scene, leaving Cassian with the siren turning a deathly shade of white in his arms.
"Nononononononononononononononononononononono Kani please no-" He clutched at him, knocking the hat off and digging at the wound. Maybe if he pulled it out fast enough. The pain of having fingers in it caused the fairy to whine, and he pushed at his hands weakly.
"Don't touch- Cass I-" He was blinking hard, the bullet a plug against immediate death, but only for so long. Cassian's face was pulled in an agonized grimace, pulling the siren close to him.
"You're going to be fine, you'll be fine, we'll pull it out and put some water on it and you'll be just fine you're going to be just fine Kani." He was not going to be just fine. Kani's vision was starting to blacken in the corners, and an odd coldness was overcoming his hands and legs. He never knew this feeling. Of course he wouldn't. But at the time were he should have felt the most dread and anguish... His failing hands took Cassian's, steering them away from the hole in his chest, pressing his numbing lips to warmer fingers.
"M'gonna... be... just fine, Cass- Cassian." His smile was fading, his voice was fading, he was fading, and he tugged on the priest. Unable to refuse, he leaned down, and the siren placed loving kisses to his mouth and cheeks, trying to wash away the tears.
"Just... just fine." Cassian couldn't place the point where the siren stopped breathing. He couldn't remember the exact time where the body in his hands turned to dead weight. He just huddled himself over the lifeless body of the siren, and his wails of agony filled the quiet night air as the fairy lights in the forest danced and played.
"There's folks out there like me, Cassy. There's fairies out there who didn't do nuthin'. Maybe they ain't got what I got, but they still don't deserve ta be killed fer it do they?
